General Secretariat - Riyadh

His Excellency Mr Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC),  expressed grave concern over the continued detention of a number of United Nations employees in Yemen, as well as a number of workers in non-governmental civil and international organisations.

His Excellency called on the Houthi militias to release the detainees without delay, and to enable them to spend the Eid holiday with their families. He also underscored the importance of ensuring the safety and security of workers in United Nations organisations and all relief organisations, and allowing them to carry out their humanitarian tasks.

Moreover, His Excellency stated that such arrests exacerbate the humanitarian situation in brotherly Yemen, pointing to the need to comply with the requirements of international humanitarian law and to allow humanitarian organisations to carry out their tasks and deliver aid to those entitled to it without delay.

Furthermore, His Excellency reiterated the keenness of the GCC states on the success of the peace process in the Republic of Yemen under the patronage of the United Nations, and providing them with full support within the framework of the three agreed references, represented by the Gulf Initiative, the outcomes of the comprehensive National Dialogue Conference, and Security Council Resolution 2216.
